Wednesday, April 2 Breakouts
Predicting Office Rents Using Artificial Neural Networks – Ning Zheng How to time adjust the office rents using the actual rental information? Do you assign the market rents to the units or to the building as a whole? How to predict the office rents using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN)? What are the pros and cons of implementing ANN in assessment practices? This presentation will address all these challenges and shed light on non-residential property valuation.
Take Back Your Time! How AI Can Help – Logan Wehlage Explore the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in property assessment with Logan Wehlage from Benchmark Assessment Consultants. This session will introduce the basics of AI interaction and demonstrate its practical applications within the property assessment industry. Participants will gain insights into how AI can enhance operational efficiency and accuracy, drawing on real-world examples from Benchmark's practices and the potential for significant AI infrastructure developments in Alberta. The presentation will also feature a live demonstration showcasing the creation and use of custom GPT models for professional and personal use, followed by an engaging question and answer segment. This course is designed to equip property assessors with the knowledge and tools to leverage AI technology in their work, fostering a forward-thinking approach to the industry's challenges and opportunities.

Speaker Bios
Tanya Boutin
Tanya Boutin is a dedicated legal professional representing the City of Edmonton in complex administrative and litigation matters. She advocates for the City before administrative boards and tribunals, including the Assessment Review Board, Safety Codes Council, and Subdivision and Development Appeal Board. With extensive courtroom experience, Tanya has appeared before the Alberta Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada, ensuring the City's interests are effectively represented at all levels. Beyond litigation, Tanya provides strategic legal advice to individual clients and City Council, guiding the development and implementation of policies that shape Edmonton’s governance and operations.
Gio Giordano
Gio holds a bachelor's degree from State University of New York at Geneseo. He joined Tyler Technologies in 2012 and serves as a regional sales lead in the Property & Recording division. In this capacity, he focuses on meeting the needs of appraisal and tax clients in the western region of the U.S., New England states, a handful of southern states, and several Canadian provinces. His depth of knowledge in property tax and assessment services allows him to proactively identify viable solutions for clients to help them meet the needs of today's busy and challenged office.
Thomas Hussey
Thomas Hussey is a support specialist working for CATALIS on the CAMAlot product and has been in the role since 2021. His role is to help municipalities with their CAMA and assessment questions. Previously, he worked as an Assessor 1 for Strathcona County, learning the ins and outs of Alberta assessment for 7 years. He is a graduate of Lakeland College’s Appraisal and Assessment program.
Mike Krim
Mike Krim, AMAA, graduated from the Lakeland College program in 1990 and soon after started his assessment career with Rockyview County. A year later, he moved to private assessment with Compass Assessment Consultants and, in 1997, started his own company, Tanmar Consulting. Tanmar now serves 18 municipal clients and is based out of Sherwood Park. Mike was very closely integrated with the CAMAlot developers prior to the change in ownership in 2021, having shared office space with them for many years. Mike is also finishing up 6 years on our association’s Executive Committee as the Financial Director.
Grace Martin
Author, high school teacher, and professional development speaker Grace Martin brings a wealth of time management knowledge to the table. Her experience as a wellness coach led to the creation of her ebook "My Physics Teacher Said: 10 Ways to Think Smarter and Live Better," while balancing young adult fiction writing, parenting, spiritual healing, coaching, and teaching. Grace is a proponent of balancing all dimensions of our well-being for a more productive, healthy, and fulfilling life both at work and at home.
Mark Parsons
Mark Parsons Vice President and Chief Economist, ATB Financial Mark is the Vice President and Chief Economist at ATB Financial, where he leads a dynamic team in providing insightful commentary and strategic economic outlooks, primarily focused on Alberta. With over two decades of experience in senior economic positions, including notable roles at Alberta Treasury Board and Finance, PwC, and the Department of Finance Canada, Mark has established himself as a trusted authority in the field. He is a regular speaker at industry conferences and a frequent contributor to media discussions on economic trends. He holds a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Alberta.
Kyle Souhrada
Kyle Souhrada is a Lead Solutions Consultant with Tyler Technologies based in Denver, Colorado. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Geography and has spent 15 years in the geospatial and property valuation industries. Kyle is responsible for providing software demonstrations of Tyler Technology’s Property & Recording solutions for clients across North America.
Michael Swanberg
Michael Swanberg, Partner at RMRF, acts for a range of clients, including professional regulatory organizations, municipalities and public bodies, employers and employees, and media outlets. He approaches his work with a keen eye for detail and a practical sensibility. Michael provides advice in the area of Municipal Tax Assessment for municipalities throughout Alberta. He has appeared as primary and secondary counsel at hearings before Assessment Review Boards and the Land and Property Rights Tribunal in matters related to tax assessment. Michael is a member of the Association of Canadian Assessors’ Counsel. Michael works with organizations that regulate and govern various professions. His work includes prosecuting discipline matters and acting as independent legal counsel to disciplinary tribunals.
Anton Szabo
Anton Szabo holds a Bachelors and Masters Degree from the University of Alberta in Political Science and completed work in a Masters of Advanced International Studies Program from the University of Vienna. He began his career as an Edmonton City Council political staffer and transitioned to a member of Edmonton’s Administration in 2011. Since that time, he has held a variety of positions with both Assessment and Taxation as well as Intergovernmental Affairs. He currently holds the position of the Director of Policy and Data Quality within the City of Edmonton’s Assessment and Taxation Branch.
Logan Wehlage
Logan is a partner at Benchmark Assessment Consultants and has 20 years of experience in property assessment throughout Alberta, working in both urban and rural areas. He is committed to integrating technology to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of assessments. Identifying as a technologist, Logan is dedicated to leveraging innovative tools to maintain a competitive edge in the industry.
Carol Zukiwski
Carol Zukiwski's practice is primarily focused on assisting municipalities and the provincial assessor with property assessment complaints and appeals. Carol also serves as counsel to administrative tribunals helping them with determining a fair hearing procedure and with decision writing. She appears regularly before the Municipal Government Board, Composite Assessment Review Boards and before the Court of Queen’s Bench. Carol has been on the staff of two Boards and a member of two additional Boards. Carol is a Qualified Arbitrator (Q.Arb) which is a national designation. Arbitrators are appointed to solve disputes under commercial contracts, labour disputes, disputes, family and estate disputes. This allows Carol to use strong skills in a fair process and decision writing as an independent neutral adjudicator. Carol is also an instructor with the Foundation of Administrative Justice and is appointed to the Payment In Lieu of Taxes Federal Tribunal.
